How To Choose The Right LED?

In order to choose the right LED for your project, you should have a general understanding and knowledge of the different types of LEDs, their typical applications, and their differences in electrical, physical and optical characteristics.

There are many different types of LEDs on the market today.

1. The first consideration when choosing an LED is to determine the color.

2. Lens type. Diffused or Clear.

3. The type of power and drivability of the LED needs to be determined.

4. LEDs of different wavelengths (color) and type have different power requirements and electrical characteristics. The type of power is a major factor in determining the best LED or LED circuit configuration. In higher voltage applications, it may be more suitable to use many smaller LEDs, in place of one or two larger LEDs, to reduce the amount of power and heat that needs to be regulated.

5. Always refer to the LED specification documentation for information on electrical, physical, optical and thermal characteristics.

- Diffused Lens LED has a wider viewing angle and it covers a wider area = low mcd rating.

- Clear Lens LED has a narrow viewing angle or narrow beam = high mcd rating.

- Iv (Visual Intensity) or Luminous Intensity = mcd rating.

Important LED ratings Information

If you plan on experimenting with LEDs please be aware of the following important ratings:

mA = current: 20 mA.
V = voltage: Standard LEDs 2.1 to 3.6V. It varies based on the color and manufacturer.
mcd (millicandelas): brightness rating, the higher the number the brighter the LED.
viewing angle (in degrees): rating of how the light is dispersed. Low value is more of a narrow beam the LED will put out and less light will be dispersed. A higher number or wider viewing angle will disperse more light and usually covers a wider area than the narrow angle.
